Now in "retirement," I see my life has always been about art, and remains to be so.
Teaching supported my art, yet is in itself an art. Where else off the stage does one write, direct, and perform? It started with college sociology, switched to American history, and segued to music instruction.
Music began as a small child in ballet. Over time it segued into acappella singing, cello, percussion, piano, opera chorus, jazz vocals, Bach chorus, flute, garage band, and 'ukulele.
Writing developed through editing text books and scholarly journals. Next came academic books and articles, mostly on the theme of inequality. Eventually I went into trade publishing of biographies featuring women over several generations of family life.
Photography and cartooning are longtime visual expressions. I seldom take photographs any more, though I have a backlog of documentary work. My cartoons are my compensation for little facility for fine arts drawing or painting. Some months I just draw, instead of write.
Volunteering now incorporates all of these art forms, whether writing curriculum material, teaching ukulele to at-risk children, or performing music at a rehabilitation center. I also developed and manage several non-profit websites, and am so busy I haven't had time to redo my own. Thank you Weebly for providing a quick solution!
