Lessons for Youngsters
In 2009 I started as a volunteer to teach youngsters in our local Mentor Me program. The students who passed the initial set of classes were able to keep their instrument. Their adult mentors take the class as well, so they are able to share what they learned with one another.
My teaching method is influenced by that developed in Canada by my own mentor, James Hill, and J. Chalmers Doane. They emphasize a consistent blend of picking, strumming chords, singing, and theory. I also encourage my young students to write songs and be creative in their playing style.

Adult Lessons
As part of the 'Ukulele Club, I give small group workshops on various techniques. Many adults thrive in group instruction, where they see they are not alone, and enjoy helping one another out during the process. Thanks to my experience in college teaching, I know how to prepare a class, what methods work best, and what handout materials will help as a follow through after the class.
I also accept adults who are able to commit to the regular practice required as a private student. My approach is to create unique lessons each week to fit the student's skill needs and musical goals.
