I never expected to become a writer. After graduate school, however,
I became the first Managing Editor of Simulation and Games. I enjoyed
editing other people's work, and studying the craft of writing. I co-authored two books on simulation with colleagues at Johns Hopkins University. Then several
New York publishers hired me for free lance editing of sociology books.
After moving to California, I added further textbooks and professional books, this time on
the topics of gender, race, and power in the United States..
Living in Sonoma County put me under the spell of Jack London, and two
more books followed. My courses on history on the Gilded Age and Progressive Era led to two other multi-generational biographies.
During the early years of my academic career, I published numerous articles in sociology as well, and worked on the editorial
boards of a half dozen scholarly journals.
My agent is Elizabeth Knappman at
New England Publishing Associates.
